The Ohio University Clarinet Studio is comprised of outstanding undergraduate and graduate music majors from all over the world. Under the guidance of Professor of Clarinet Rebecca Rischin, each student learns about aspects of clarinet technique, repertoire, reed care, instrument care, musical interpretation, and pedagogy in preparation for a musical career in his or her desired specialization.
Ohio University offers the Bachelor of Music degree in music education, music therapy, music performance, music composition, and the Bachelor of Arts in music degree. Our renowned Honors Tutorial College allows students intensive one-to-one collaboration with our world-renowned faculty. Students accepted into this program receive a full tuition scholarship for all four years of study at Ohio University. Ohio University offers the Master of Music degree in performance, performance/pedagogy (woodwinds), music theory, music history, music composition, music education, conducting and music therapy; and the PhD in Interdisciplinary Arts Scholar/Artist Track.
Music majors take individual clarinet lessons, participate in a weekly studio class, and play in organized chamber groups and in our outstanding large ensembles which include Symphony Orchestra, Wind Symphony and Symphonic Band. Some also play in Jazz Ensemble and in New Music Ensemble. Nonmajors may also take lessons and play in ensembles. Spring semesters music majors participate in clarinet choir in preparation for our Clarinet Gala. The Ohio University Clarinet Choir performed at the 2002 and 2005 Ohio Music Educators Association Conferences in Cincinnati.
In addition, our annual Student Soloist Competition selects students to perform concerti with the Symphony Orchestra or Wind Symphony. Previous clarinet winners include: Ying Chang (MM, Performance, 2002); Weilun He (Performance Certificate, 2002; MM, Performance/Pedagogy, 2004); Angela Opell (MM, Performance, 2003); Valerie Breda (MM, Performance, 2018); Juan Gonzalez (MM, Performance, 2020); and Michelle Camargo (MM Performance/Pedagogy expected 2022).
Students may also have the opportunity to play in regional professional orchestras such as the Ohio Valley Summer Theater Orchestra (Athens), Ohio Valley Symphony (Gallipolis), the Columbus Symphony, the ProMusica Chamber Orchestra of Columbus, the River Cities Symphony Orchestra (Parkersburg, WV), and the West Virginia Symphony (Charleston). In addition, Athens has a thriving alternative music scene and many students play Klezmer and jazz at our local venues.
Graduate students on assistantship have the opportunity to teach Ohio University courses: clarinet methods, introductory music theory, music appreciation, and individual clarinet lessons. Both graduate and undergraduate students can also teach individual clarinet lessons to elementary, middle school, and high school students in the Athens Community Music School.
