OU WOODWIND DAY

The fourth Ohio University Woodwind Day occurred on November 23, 2024. The day featured Matthew Nelson, Professor of Clarinet at the University of Louisville in Kentucky. He presented a solo recital with Jieun Lee, collaborative pianist at Ohio University featuring both traditional and avant garde clarinet compositions and a master class featuring Ohio University clarinet students. The grand finale clarinet choir concert featured Joel Panas, MM student in clarinet performance, as soloist in Faustin and Maurice Jeanjean’s Guisganderie. This clarinet choir was comprised of approximately 50 OU students and guests—high school students, alumni, amateurs and professionals. Approximately 70 woodwinds on all five instruments—high school and college students, amateurs, and professionals attended. Guests were led in a fun clarinet jeopardy game by clarinetists Morgan Eisaman, senior in music therapy and Allie Kuhl, junior in Music Education. C.A. House exhibited instruments and accessories and offered free emergency instrument repairs the entire day, courtesy of Dave Dermberger.

The third Ohio University Woodwind Day occurred on November 18, 2023. The day featured Garrick Zoeter, Professor of Clarinet at Shenandoah University in Winchester, VA. He presented a solo recital with Alexander Bernstein, Assistant Professor of Piano at Shenanodah University, featuring avant garde clarinet compositions and a master class featuring Ohio University clarinet students. The grand finale clarinet choir concert featured Michelle, Camargo, MM student in Performance/Pedagogy and Arts Administration as clarinet concerto soloist in the Bassi Rigoletto Fantasy, conducted by clarinetist Emily Talley, PhD student in Interdisciplinary Arts and Chair of Music Education. This clarinet choir was comprised of 45 OU students and guests—high school students, alumni, amateurs and professionals. The day also included an exhibit by C&A Music. 69 woodwinds on all five instruments—high school and college students, amateurs, and professionals attended. Guests also were led in a fun game by clarinetists Eric Carr, junior in Music Education and Allie Kuhl, sophomore in Music Education.

The second Ohio University Woodwind Day occurred on November 19, 2022 . The day featured Sarunas Jankauskas, Associate Professor of Clarinet at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, VA. He presented a solo recital with Johan Botes, Associate Professor of Piano at Marshall University in Huntington, WV, featuring both traditional and avant garde clarinet compositions and a master class featuring Ohio University clarinet students. The grand finale concert featured 6 Ohio University student soloists in duo concerti with clarinet choir accompaniment by Krommer, Mendelssohn and Ponchielli: Dave Bourland, Maddi Julian, Joel Panas, Josh Smith, Jennifer Soles, and Elham Younesi. This clarinet choir was comprised of 20 Ohio University students and approximately 27 clarinet guests—high school students, alumni, amateurs and professionals. The day also included an exhibit by C&A Music. Over 65 woodwinds on all five instruments—high school and college students, amateurs, and professionals attended.

This second Ohio University Woodwind Day followed the first Woodwind Day on March 19, 2022 . The day featured Julie DeRoche, Professor of Clarinet and Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs at DePaul University in Chicago. The day included a host performance by Rebecca Rischin, OU Professor of Clarinet; a master class and fundamentals workshop with DeRoche; a clarinet choir rehearsal and performance; exhibits by C&A Music, and workshops on jazz improvisation by Dr. Matthew James, OU Professor of Saxophone and Jazz Studies, and yoga for all woodwinds by OU Prof. Alison Brown Sincoff, Professor of Flute and Assistant Director. Over 40 woodwinds on all five instruments—high school and college students, amateurs, and professionals attended.
